About Our Practice
Morris Washington, M.D., FACS, provides the very best care in advanced surgical procedures to his patients - without having to travel far from their homes. A New York-trained general surgeon, Dr. Washington has brought many years of medical and surgical experience right here to Monmouth and Ocean counties, performing the latest in gastrointestinal endoscopy, advanced laparoscopic or minimally invasive surgery, and bariatric (weight loss) surgery. Dr. Washington is an affiliate of CentraState Healthcare System in Freehold, New Jersey.
"I am a New York-trained surgeon and graduate of a prestigious American medical school. I have extensive experience that allows me to provide a wide spectrum of surgical care," says Dr. Washington, who has specialized in laparoscopic surgery and gastrointestinal endoscopy for more than 15 years. "Because I am performing procedures that are usually only available in large cities like New York and Philadelphia, and because these procedures are so cutting-edge, our patients are receiving unique services for this area."
Gastrointestinal endoscopy involves examining the interior lining of the esophagus, stomach, and the small and large intestines using a flexible instrument called and endoscope. Through the endoscope, physicians can look for ulcers, inflammation, tumors, infection, or bleeding, and obtain tissue samples or biopsies, remove polyps, and treat bleeding. Endoscopy can also show problems that do not necessarily appear on x-rays and can sometimes eliminate the need for exploratory surgery.
"With minimally invasive surgery, patients can enjoy the benefits of minimal scarring, less pain, and faster recovery, which is something you cannot put a price on," says Dr. Washington, who specializes in advanced laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive approach to treating conditions and diseases of the colon, stomach, and rectum. This technology involves physicians making smaller incisions, which significantly reduces pain, decreases the possibility of wound infections, and shortens hospital stays.
Bariatric or weight loss surgery is often reserved for those who are severely obese and have tried repeatedly to lose weight through diet, exercise, and weight-loss medication. Potential patients usually undergo medical and psychological evaluations to determine if they are candidates for this surgery.
Perhaps most important, Dr. Washington wants patients to know that they come first. "Our patients love us because we take the time to explain the procedures," he says. "We educate them, show them how the operation is performed, and when they leave the office, they really understand what the problem is and how we are going to take care of them. We treat every patient as a friend."
