What is General Surgery?

General Surgery is the branch of medicine that deals with diagnosis and involves operative procedures to treat injury, deformity and disease. It can be used for routine procedures in a doctor’s office as well as for complicated operations performed by a group of doctors or a medical team in a hospital. Despite its name, general surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on surgical treatment of abdominal organs, e.g. intestines including esophagus, stomach, colon, liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland (depending on the availability of head and neck surgery specialists) and hernias.
