About Obesity

About Obesity

Obesity is emerging as a health epidemic around the world. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity is rapidly spreading across all regions and demographic groups. An estimated 97 million adults in the United States are overweight or obese. That figure represents more than 50% of the American adult population. Of this group, 11 million adults suffer from severe obesity.

Obesity is the excessive accumulation of adipose tissue to an extent that health is impaired. Obesity is usually determined using the body mass index or BMI. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Obesity Education Initiative Expert Panel developed guidelines for identification, assessment and treatment of obesity.

Check your BMI

BMI is the standard measurement of choice for many health professionals. BMI is based on a weight-to-height ratio. Overweight is defined as a BMI between 25 to 30, and obesity is defined as a BMI greater than or equal to 30. Obesity correlates strongly with obesity related co-morbid conditions and mortality.
